Club Notes 29/06/10
Seniors - The seniors survived a late scare when defeating Carrickmacross 1-10 to 2-06 on Wednesday night last. Blayney were rocked by a Carrick goal straight from the throw in but excellent scores from the Hughes brothers Damian and Jason calmed any nerves and further scores from Keith Hill and Patrick Tavey saw Blayney draw level after 15 minutes. A brace of Carrick points saw them restore their lead before a sweeping Blayney move ended with Patrick Tavey finishing to the net. The goal was followed quickly by points from Tavey and Damian Hughes with a solitary Carrick point reducing their arrears to 2 by half-time. Carrick closed the gap to the minimum in the first minute of the second half but Blayney were well on top and points from Tavey, Hill and Irwin seemed to have secured the points but a piece of quick thinking from a harshly awarded free saw Carrick goal to draw level with time almost up. Blayney dug deep and Keith Hill landed a long range free in the last minute to seal a one point victory. The seniors are in action this Saturday night when they face Clontibret in a star game at St Marys Park (7.00pm).
Junior B - A devastating opening 10 minutes was the key to the Bs comprehensive victory over Clontibret on Saturday evening. Brendan McElroy opened the scoring with a point before Aidan Ward added 2-2 in a matter of minutes with the second goal in particular being a highlight. Not to be outdone Brendan then added a further 1-4 to leave Blayney out of sight before half time. The second half was much more low key but some excellent point scoring from Brendan, Gary Ward and Paddy Conlon ensured that there was to be no way back for Clontibret, final score Faughs 3-13 Clontibret 1-09. The Bs will now face Corduff in the semi finals over the coming weeks.
Junior C - The Cs were also decisive winners in their quarter-final clash with Eire Og last Wednesday night with most of the damage again done in the opening exchanges of the match. Blayney had 1-6 on the board before Eire Og settled, Gerry Brady 1-1, Paddy Conlon 0-2 and Cathal O'Flaherty, Brian McGuigan and Brendan McElroy (0-1 each) getting Blayneys scores. A goal on 20 mins for Eire Og briefly halted Blayneys gallop but when Mark Treanor raided forward from full-back to get a wonderful goal Blayney re-established their stranglehold on the game. The second half was more even with an early second half goal for Eire Og being cancelled out by one from Brian McGuigan, final score Faughs 3-13 Eire Og 2-04. The Cs were in semi-final action last night against Sean McDermotts, check results section.
Under 21 - The U21s had a disappointing start to the league on Monday night when they were defeated by Monaghan Harps 0-15 to 0-06. Blayney started promisingly and lead by 4 points to 2 after 15 mins with the scores coming from Fergal Duffy, Patrick Tavey (2) and Johnny Kernan but faded badly after this and 2 points in the remaining 45 minutes tells its own story. Next Monday night they travel to Scotstown (8.00pm).
Minor - The minor league resumed on Tuesday night with a home fixture against Scotstown, check results section. Next Tuesday night they travel to Latton for a championship clash (8.00pm).
Under 16 - It was a case of what might have been for the U16s last Thursday night when they drew with Clontibret 2-05 to 1-08. Scorers A McElroy (1-0), B Hanratty (1-0), M Kelly, A McNamara, B Duffy, K Mackin and N McCann (0-1 each). Tonight (Thursday) face Monaghan Harps.
